The third Baltic Summer School of Anthropology will be taking place in Rucka on 20-23 August. This event has caused a major international resonance, with more than 200 people interested anthropology submitting applications for participation in this event.
This year’s theme is Applied Anthropology. With that, experts invited to the summer school will explain how knowledge and practices employed in social anthropology can be used to analyse and solve practical problems. Professionals will explain how knowledge of theories of anthropology can influence and clarify processes in engineering sciences and logistics, entrepreneurship, politics and the public opinion formation process. The summer school will feature lectures, creative workshops and presentations of different projects led by world-renowned professionals.
Jeppe T. Linnet, market analyst, anthropologist and founder of Linnet Research, will tell about Danish experience in terms of linking anthropological research and entrepreneurship.
Dan Podjed, Assistant Professor for Cultural and Social Anthropology in the University of Ljubljana, studies people’s driving habits, the interaction between people and technology and online social networks. In his lecture, he will tell about the development of anthropology in Europe and its differences from USA and Australia. He will also tell about opportunities of applying science «outside the academic environment».
Another noteworthy guests of the summer school is Swedish ethnologist Paul Agnidakis. His range of interests includes nationalism, cultural heritage and identity. He will tell about post-industrial ethnography of society and processes that govern formation of identity of different societies, which is heavily influenced by the matter of immigration.
Latvian social anthropologist and former Education Minister Roberts Kilis will also make an appearance. In his lecture he will discuss topics like «formation of political decisions», «lobbying practice» and the interpretation and application of terms like «long-term thinking» and «national strategy». Kilis’ lecture will be free of charge to residents and guests of Cesis. The lecture will take place in Ruckas manor at 12:00-13:30 on 22 August.
The third Baltic Summer School of Anthropology is organized by graduates of Riga Stradins University Anna Zabicka, Daina Berzina, Liene Blauzde, Matiss Steinerts and Silva Suhanenkova in cooperation with Latvian Anthropologists’ Association. The summer school is also supported by Riga Stradins University, University of Latvia, Amadeus, Prike, Aldaris and Food Union.
